Teaching Writing ✍🏼📔.

 Hello! Welcome once again❤️.

For today's entry, we will talk about something more theoretical compared to our last two entries, and that is... Teaching Writing✍🏼📔.

When we talk about writing skills, we are referring to a lot of different aspects such as spelling, punctuation, handwriting, sentence construction, paragraphing, text cohesion, and register or style. When teaching these writing skills, the role of the teacher is basically to be a monitor, resource, and feedback provider.

At the beginning of our class, teacher Orlando asked us to do some tracings and practice our different types of handwriting, which was really fun and it brought back memories of when I was a kid doing different tracings at school😅.

As you can see, I was struggling a little bit with my cursive letter🥲, since I hadn't used it in so long😂. Writing in cursive has never been my favorite, but when it comes to my print writing I'm not so good either, it is very funny because I consider to have good handwriting but the thing is that I use a mix of the two different types😂.

There are different approaches when teaching writing, these can be building a writing habit, writing with an intention, process, and product, as a cooperative activity, and even creative writing. So as we can see, students can develop their writing skills in two ways: academically🎓, which includes compositions, grammar, and vocabulary; and in a creative way🎨, like when writing poetry or tales.

As another activity, we were asked to use the writing process to write about "the best day of our life", meaning that we had to do a little brainstorming, a draft, a revision, and the final product☝🏼.

We also worked with our groups to practice a cooperative writing activity. We had to come up with a story and when the teacher said "next" we had to pass around the book to our other classmates so they could keep going with the story. This is what we came up with😂.

We learned about "bread and butter notes"🍞🧈 which are basically small thank-you notes that you give someone on different occasions such as when they help you with something or give you a place to stay. This was very interesting for me because I had done and gotten some of those before but I had no clue that they had an specific name. Here's a picture of a bread and butter note that someone gave me a few months ago🥰💛.

This topic was very long because there was a lot of information and many exercises that we did, so we split the topic into two classes👀. In the second class, we talked more about grammar and vocabulary
We talked all about different ways of presenting lexis, ways to learn grammar deductively and inductively, and gave our points of view on how we preferred to learn grammar and vocabulary.

We also talked about how there are many things that students can do to learn about writing and some of them are:
  • Reading or listening to music, podcast to be exposed to new vocabulary.
  • Try things out (practice writing).
  • Use the new vocabulary that you learn when speaking and writing.
As you can see, there are a lot of things when it comes to teaching writing😯. Here, I tried to summarize what we did in our class, but there is a lot more to talk about. I think that sometimes students say that they don't like to write because they feel like it needs to be perfect. But if you write, without any pressure, and just for fun, you will notice how good and magical is to write.

I know that it was probably a lot of information😅, but this will be it for today👀.
I hope you enjoyed it and I will see you around, byeeee 👋🏻💛.
