Learning Styles👩🏻‍🎓🧠.

Hello! It's been so long since I last saw you here! 😳😯

Welcome back! How was your vacation? Did you have fun or had a chance to rest?👀 For me, it was a nice week to disconnect and have fun, I went to Guatemala by myself to visit some friends that invited me and I had such a great time😁😁😁.

But now, we are back to our normal programming and we start with a new topic which is...drum roll pleaseee🥁... Learning Styles🧠.

In 1992, Neil Fleming and Colleen Mills proposed the VARK model, which is basically the strategies we, learners, use to internalize something. On most cases, everyone has a combination of all the
different learning styles but one is usually the most dominant🤫.

Now you might be wondering, what does VARK stand for? I'll explain.

Visual: These type of learners prefer to see information in pictures, diagrams, demonstrations, etc📈. And they can also get distracted in lectures with no visual aids. Basically, they link concepts with pictures🖼️.

Auditory: If you are in this category, you might be able to absorb a lecture with little effort👂🏼. You prefer spoken information and might not even be a huge fan of note-taking🤢

Read/Write: These learners remember information displayed as words📚. They are all about words, words, words, and, oh! words! So note-taking is also a must!✍🏼.

Kinesthetic: Their primary mode for taking in information is by touching or getting involved in different activities🧩. Roleplaying or using vivid examples is a must for these learners.

As an activity for the class, teacher Orlando asked us to fill out some tests to see which kind of learning styles we had, and then we had to compare them with our group. Here are some of my results:

As you can see, my results are kind of different in each test, maybe this is due to the type or context of the questions. But as you can see in the second picture, the difference is not as big between one and another, which I think makes a lot of sense to me, because I feel like I am a pretty balanced learner since I like to learn in different ways but I still have some favorites🤷🏻‍♀️.

As a second part of this topic, we had to do a quick presentation😯. We needed to talk about a topic that we wanted to teach and how we would do it by putting the VARK into practice. We decided to talk about the parts of a house, and we started working on our poster😁.

Mauricio was spying on us, and Maria was too busy drawing on the whiteboard😂😂😂.

This was our final result🤩. Not bad for having it done in 10-15 minutes haha😅😂.

Something really important to mention is the difference between Multiple Intelligences and Learning Styles because it might be confusing for some people🤨, but basically Learning Styles are the “preferences” on how a student processes information and Multiple Intelligences are abilities or strengths that work together and support different types of learners☝🏼.

It was an interesting topic to learn about, me and my group were talking about how some of us are very different learners, for example, Nathaly and I are very similar, and Dani and María are very alike. So it is very cool to see these things, especially as a group, because even if we are different somehow we make it work and are very good at working together! 👩🏻👩🏼👩🏾👩🏽‍🦱

I hope you enjoyed this recap of the Learning Styles, I will see you in the next entry, byeeee👋🏻💛.
