The Grammar Translation Method ✍🏼.

It is nice to know that you are here after getting to know a little bit about me! But here, we officially start our English Didactics journey, exciting!🤩 The first things we are learning about are the different types of language teaching methods, and to make this a little interesting, I will be telling you a little bit about the method, how we put it in practice in my class and maybe show you some pictures or videos here and there 👀.
The first method we are talking about is (as you guessed by the title), The Grammar Translation Method (TGTM). This method is one of the two fundamental methods out there and it's considered traditional teaching.
The GTM was proposed by Professor Karl Plotz around the 19th century, and it focuses more on reading and writing skills✍🏼📖. As the name of the method mentions, it uses a lot of translation exercises for teaching, which helps students learn about the right application of grammar and correct sentence structure.
This method is taught deductively, which means that it goes straight to the point. It uses textbooks, and it's even possible for someone to teach without having to know the language (however, this is not recommendable). Some of the benefits of this method are that students learn a lot of vocabulary, helps with memory, and it can improve their reading and writing skills👍🏼; but it is also safe to mention that this method has some downsides such as, not being interactive or engaging, which can make the classes a little bit boring👎🏼.
As an exercise to practice, we had to translate this poem in groups of four. In the end, it was a very interesting exercise because we were able to see all the different translations and words used by each group. 😎
