The Direct Method 🧠.

Hello, how are you?👀 Welcome once again 😋

I hope you are having a great day, afternoon, or night! Today I bring you another important teaching method, and as you probably already read, today we are talking about The Direct Method (also called the "natural method").

The Direct Method was established in Germany and France around 1900 and proposed by Maximilian Berlitz, it is the second fundamental method, but the difference between this one and the GTM is the Direct Method focuses more on listening and speaking👂🏼🗣️.

The main idea of this method is that learning a second language should be like first language learning, meaning that it should have lots of oral interaction, and spontaneous use of language✨. It is also taught inductively, which means that it works based on context. Some of its characteristics are that everyday vocabulary is taught, helps with correct grammar and pronunciation, you can have better social skills, and can start a conversation easier🤩.  But some of its challenges or weaknesses are that is probably not the best for large classes and your class has to always be dynamic, which can be hard to come up with ideas all the time😓.

There are also some important techniques that you can take into practice with this method, and they are:

  • Proliferation: Illustrate your point - repetition.
  • Visual Support: Demonstrate, signs and gestures, and dramatize.
  • Listening activities: Read stories, and play audio.
  • Oral Exercises and Tasks: Questions, dialogues, pair or group work.
  • Stress-Free and Supportive Environment: Mistakes aren't bad, you give support.
Sadly for this class, I didn't take any pictures or videos of the activities, but we did a lot of speaking activities such as reading and repeating and making spontaneous conversations with our classmates🤓.

And that is all for today's method! As you can see, it is very different from the GTM, but both of them are fundamental and as our teacher says, they are the mom and dad for the following method to come, so stay tuned for the next couple of entries, and thank you for reading me once again! Bye!! 👋🏻💛
